MALAYSIAKU GEMILANG THE SERIES vol. 27.1

MALAYSIA BOOK OF RECORDS

Inspiring The Nation

Longest Jalur Gemilang on the
Great Wall of China

The beginning

It all started on June 25, 2000, when a group of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia students, led by Mohd Khair Al-Amin, the director of the Beijing 2000 Project, traipsed into The Malaysia Book of Records office to discuss the mechanics of this feat.

It seemed an almost impossible task, what with having to transport a 2kmlong flag that weighed almost 2 tonnes, and having to hoist the flag across the Great Wall of China on the country’s 51st National Day. In short it was uphill all the way.

With the 80 UKM students, a group of delegates led by YB Dato’ Hishammuddin bin Tun Hussein, the Minister of Youth & Sports then, eagerly boarded a Malaysia
Airlines flight for Beijing on September 30 for the historic event.

At the dawn of October 1, as early as 6am, the students made their way to the Great Wall of China. They had to carefully roll out the three pieces of the
Jalur Gemilang and assemble them into one long flag.

This is a story of sheer determination, where overwhelming odds have been surmounted to accomplish what has been described as an impossible misssion. It shows all obstacles can be overcome if
one puts his or her mind to it.

The supersession
On November 2, 2003, 23 students from Persatuan Gabungan Pelajar-Pelajar Semenanjung-Cawangan Khas UiTM Shah Alam, led by the advisor Hajah Paiza Idris and expedition leader, Muhd Nur Azrul Che Zabani, beat the windy cold weather, to climb one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Wall of China.

The team took 4 hours 17 mins to unfurl the distinctive hues of blue, yellow, white and red, the national flag, ‘Jalur Gemilang’ across the wall, like an eagle majestically soaring in the sky. The feat superseded what took place 3 years ago that left a mark in history.

As the 3.2km-long Jalur Gemilang being spread across the only structure that could be seen from the moon, one can only imagine the pride and joy, relishing the glorious moment of being a Malaysian.
